MISS ILLINOIS ANDREA FRITZ was featured in November in the Chicago Sun Times with Secretary of State Jesse White, advertising the Illinois Literacy Foundation's Holiday Literacy Project, sponsored by Borders Bookstores. Andrea launched her statewide speaking tour during October's Red Ribbon week .
With a focus on preventing youth violence, Andrea advocates against drug and alcohol use and articulates the impact of literacy in relation to behavior. She emphasizes the National Institute of Health statement: "School dropouts, teenage pregnancy, poor academic achievement and crime are consequences of not learning to read." Her presentation is formatted with appropriate verbage and information specific to the individual grade levels K through 12 which she will address.
Andrea has completed her junior year as a Dean's List student at Eastern Illinois University with majors in English and French. Planning to enter the teaching profession after graduation , she will first spend a semester at the French Institute in Nice, France.. Trained in all forms of dance, she is best known for her moving lyrical ballet "Dance with My Father"
As founder of "Books on Wings" dedicated to providing books to families, schools and facilities in need, she serves as an Ambassador for the Illinois Literacy Foundation, national spokesperson for Fight Crime:Invest in Kids, the G.R.E.A.T. program and the Empower program. She has advocated for the Book Stamp Act and at the invitation of speaker Dennis Hastert will testify on youth violence issues.. A published poet, Andrea gives a voice to the emotions of the young. Miss Illinois receives $20,000 in scholarships with an overall total of $50,300 awarded to the twenty-five participants of this yearâs program In addition, over two and one half million dollars are available in tuition waivers or in-kind scholarships for these young women from the stateâs colleges and universities.
